U.S. expulsions of Haitians may violate international law
The White House has faced a torrent of criticism after the United States started sending planeloads full of Haitian nationals back to their crisis-wracked country over the weekend.
The mass expulsion of Haitians from the United States without screening for their protection needs may contravene international law and constitute forced returns, the United Nations’ top refugee official Filippo Grandi said on Tuesday.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also called out Biden, a fellow Democrat, on Tuesday, saying it “defies common sense” to expel the migrants to Haiti and expressing anger over tactics used by border guards to control the crowds at the camp.
