Jamil Ghoneim watched YouTube videos to learn how to turn discarded tyres into footwear for children in Idlib

Ghoneim makes the shoes for free for those most in need and charges a small amount for those who can afford the price. The inventive footwear has brought joy to children in northern Syria’s camps. Ahmed Ghazal, an 11-year-old who received a pair of shoes, explained how they have protected his feet from the ground. “Jamil gave me the shoes for free, now I walk all around the camp with them and my feet don’t get scratched by the stones on the ground. These shoes are higher quality than others because they are made from a thick material.” Ghoneim is working on a design that can better withstand rainwater and bad weather during the winter.

Residents in nearby camps have heard about Ghoneim’s skills and have expressed an interest in getting shoes made for their own children. He is ready to help and happy that he is so well regarded, but hopes for a day when his skills will no longer be needed. He would prefer to see the children in the camps live in better conditions.
