Why the US doesn’t want Turkey to invade Syria

US officials warned Turkey this week against expanding its so-called buffer zone in northeast Syria, saying such a move would complicate counter-ISIS measures, and would increase the violence that Kurds and Syrians in the region have faced since Turkey’s initial incursion in 2019. If Turkey invades northeast Syria, the worst impacts will be local. Mazloum Abdi, the General Commander of the SDF, warned in a press conference on Friday that Turkey is preparing for another invasion. Abdi acknowledged talks with the US, but expressed doubt in the coalition’s ability to stop further incursions, saying, “The coalition made stances, but they cannot stop Turkey’s attacks against our areas.”

Syria Kurds urge Russia, Iran to prevent Turkey attack

The commander of US-backed Kurdish forces in Syria on Friday urged Russia and Iran to prevent Turkey from launching a new attack in the country’s north, days before an expected Syria summit. Mazloum Abdi, chief commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, accused the international coalition of taking a “weak” position that is “insufficient to end the threats.” Abdi said that following negotiations with Russia, Kurdish forces had allowed the Syrian regime to bring more troops into Kurdish-controlled areas such as Kobane and Manbij in the north of the country.

France’s Macron under fire over Uber contacts as minister

French President Emmanuel Macron came under pressure on Monday from opposition politicians over his reported links with ride-hailing company Uber Technologies during his years as economy minister. “A minister can’t be a lobbyist! Light needs to be shone on this case. France cannot be the playground of big private companies,” senior France Insoumise lawmaker Alexis Corbiere said on Twitter. The Guardian reported that while other members of the then-Socialist government had misgivings about Uber’s push onto taxis’ turf, Macron exchanged text messages with Uber executives, who identified him as a key behind-the-scenes ally.

Diplomats seek deal to keep critical Syria aid flowing

Diplomats at the United Nations held last-ditch discussions on extending Syrian cross-border aid Sunday, as residents of the country’s rebel-held northwest feared life-saving supplies could soon halt. The lack of an agreement threatens to upend assistance to more than two million people. The aid delivery mechanism across Turkey’s border into rebel-held Syria at the Bab al-Hawa crossing is the only way UN assistance can reach civilians without navigating areas controlled by Syrian government forces.

Facebook, Twitter delete assassination videos of former Japan PM Shinzo Abe

Twitter and Facebook parent Meta said Friday they’re deleting any videos of the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that break their rules on harmful content. Multiple videos of the attack showing a gunman firing a double-barreled weapon twice at Abe were circulating on social media. Some only show the moments before and after the attack while others showed both shots. Twitter said its enforcement teams were working to “address harmful content” relating to the attack by “proactively removing” material that violates its rules, which include restrictions on sensitive media including graphic violence.
